This style of dress has been around for centuries and is one of the oldest designs of dress that you will see. The one shoulder dress was typically worn by Grecian women and men who found the toga style outfit to be lightweight and comfortable. This style of dress was referred to as the goddess dress and was extremely popular.

The design for the original one shoulder dress was incredibly simple and consisted of one piece of fabric gathered at the waist and draped over the shoulder. The waist would be enhanced by a belt and the material gathered or tied to keep it in place. The Greek men found that if they wore the one shoulder dress at knee length they could still fight and perform tasks with ease. However, for the ladies it was typical to see the dress full floor length and extremely elegant.

The Toga developed into a more structured style of sleeveless Stolas which were stitched at the shoulder seam rather than gathered. This style of dress was still worn very long and was made from cotton or silk. The one shoulder dress was very quickly adapted by other cultures and many countries that have hot temperatures found it ideal. The Middle East, Cretans and Babylonians found the design and style of the dress to be extremely comfortable in the heat.

As the Victorian Era developed, the design and style of women’s dresses became far more modest, and women were told they had to cover up. It took several years for attitudes to change and for fashion designers to begin designing dresses that showed more flesh. There were very brief moments when the one shoulder dress was incredibly popular. However, it was not until the 1920′s when people relaxed, and dresses were designed with style in mind that this dress was in strong demand.

In America, incredible styles of dresses were being seen and one of the most sought after fashion statements were the one shoulder dress. As bold, raunchy colors were being experimented with throughout the 1980′s the one shoulder dress was incredibly popular. Many other trends were designed from the inspiration of this style of dress.
